Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness - 957 Words

Chinua Achebe’s controversial essay published in 1977 focuses on the racist views woven into Joseph Conrad’s 1899 novella, Heart of Darkness. Achebe claims that Conrad uses many western stereotypes of Africa and subtly weaves them below the surface of his writing. However, due to the popularity of the novella and the skill of Conrad, his racist views go undetected. The most obvious indicator of Conrad’s racist views is the depictions of the people. They are described as â€Å"savage creatures,† yet Conrad’s novella is noted for its excellence and not its horrible racist claims. Conrad’s novella is full of parallels, such as the River Thames, which is peaceful and calm contrary to the Congo River, which is depicted as being a rough and dangerous place. By creating these parallels Conrad is representing the differences between the European people and the Natives of Congo because he fears the thought of having anything in common with them. Acheb e declares that the racist views in the novella come from Conrad s own beliefs but to conceal them he hides behind multiple narrators. Achebe puts forth a compelling article that delves deep into the depths of Heart of Darkness. Although Chinua Achebe’s essay brings forth some convincing points highlighting the racism within Heart of Darkness, he makes too many assumptions about Conrad’s true intentions and beliefs that are not concrete enough to prove that Heart of Darkness is a racist novella. Capital Punishment The Best Solution Essay - 703 Words

It is the the duty of the government to provide security for all individuals. Therefore, it is only a necessity, but also an obligation to get rid of those who impose threat or harm to any individual. Capital punishment is not always the most appropriate solution, but given the circumstances, it may be the most effective way to deal with criminals who threaten society. First of all, capital punishment would reduce taxes and makes prisons a much more effective place to hold criminals. This causes life imprisonment to become practically obsolete and prisons will be capable of functioning as a rehabilitation center. (the purpose of prison is to separate the criminals from the general population and to rehabilitate prisoners.) By†¦show more content†¦Another reason why capital punishment should be implemented in today’s society is the fact that it would actually scare/deter people away from crimes. According to Forbes.com, a little less than 7% of prisoners actually prefer prison because prison provides food and shelter. As a result of this, people sometimes even commit crimes just to get into prison. Capital punishment would make people much more scared to commit crimes, especially serious ones. Rate of crime will significantly drop and there will be fewer prisoners. As seen in the statistics provided by bestplace.net, (based on a sy stem of 1-10) California has a much higher crime rate than Texas. Texas, a state that uses capital punishment, clearly has a lower crime than California, who does not use capital punishment, because Texas simply uses capital punishment. There are no other major differences between the two states that would indicate why Texas has a lower crime rate. Although one might think that capital punishment leads to innocent deaths, this is completely false. People against capital punishment constantly claim that there have been numerous cases in which we have executed an innocent man. But the truth is that we do not have any records of ever executing an innocent man. The idea that innocent people can get executed on accident is highly false and inaccurate. The high supply of oil was beneficial to the economy due to the sudden decrease of foreign oil imports. Component #2: Problems 1) Describe some trade-offs faced by each of the following: a) A family deciding whether to buy a new car. A family that is deciding to buy a car might have to face, depending on the expense of the car and financial status of the family, major cut backs on money to afford it. These cutbacks might affect unnecessary things like: dining out, doing expensive activities, vacations, etc. This all deals with scarcity; the family wants a new car, but might not have the financial meaner to do so. B) A member of Congress deciding how much to spend on national parks. A member of congress deciding how much to spend on national parks has plenty of trade offs. The funding of the park is determined by many things including incentives, demand, and opportunity cost. If congress were to fund national parks more they may have to cut funding to other causes, but if they cut funding to the parks, then the money gained could go into a better cause. C) A company president deciding whether to open a new factory. If a company president were to pen a new factory, the demand for that companies product would have to be high. If a teacher were to prepare minimally for class, he/she may run into a very busy schedule somewhere down the road. However, if the teacher were to plan accordingly and periodically, he/she would be able to be properly prepared for the lass. If this were to happen, the teacher would have less pressure for assignments. This all has to deal with efficiency, productivity, and incentive. The teachers incentive is to not be deleted with class preparations, so he/she would nave to work efficiently to reach the optimum productivity. 2) Discuss each of the following statements from the standpoints of equity and efficiency. A) â€Å"Everyone in society should be guaranteed the best healthcare possible. † If everyone were to be guaranteed the best healthcare possible, efficiency would have to be very high to have the capability to divide healthcare among the population. Right now it would be hard to do because we don’t have high economic prosperity to spread. This could very well never happen because equity and efficiency clash when it comes to government policies. The reason they clash is because when the government tries to spread wealth evenly, efficiency shrinks. B) â€Å"When workers are laid off, they should be able to collect unemployment benefits until they find a new Job. † When workers receive unemployment, they are getting a cut of the economic pie which is equity. During these times when unemployment is high, the size of the economic pie, efficiency, is small because the overspent is distributing a large amount money to the unemployed. If the government were to issue unemployment until they find a Job it would cause an economic down fall. People are sitting around getting paid, why would they go out and get a Job, it is something else that people will Just take advantage of, like welfare. You read "Ap Economics" in category "Papers" So, in essence, it would end up hurting the government more than it would help. 3) In what ways is your standard of living different from that of your parent’s or grandparent’s when they were you age? Why have these changes occurred? There has been a big change in the standard of living even from my parent’s time to owe let alone when my grandparent’s were my age. We are now living in a technological age where everything is documented, sent, communicated, and even surveyed on electronics. People in the ass’s (when my parent’s were my age) were lucky to have their own television let alone a cell phone or car. Nowadays, teens have cars, TV’s laptops, smoothness, etc. At their fingertips to use at their command. Back then not very many people had the resources or meaner to obtain electronic devices. Many of the things we have now, my grandparent’s didn’t. My grandmother didn’t even have an electric oven, she had a coal one to cook on. When my grandfather came here off of the boat, he got a Job paying 23 cents an hour. So, its not only material things that have changed in the standard of living, but wages too. People are paid so much more now than in the ass’s, but with the raise of wages, brought along inflation. These changes have occurred because of the changes in education and regulations. People now more than ever are going to college to get a degree in whatever it is they want to pursue. With knowledge comes better products that are more efficient and easier to use. With the change in regulations came changes in minimum wage, laws, and codes that have to be kept up with. Component Applications (See next full page for article) This article posted by The New York Times states that although unemployment is lowering, it is doing it in a rather slow and steady pace. Stocks prices have risen and are staying high along with mortgage loans and many others. Since the Job market is growing at a slow rate, banks are now going to start raising interest and lengthening loan terms. As anticipated, the economy is expanding in the right ways. If as many lobs are created in July and August as they were in June, then the economy is on the dad to recovery. The Principal of Economics in which this would apply most to would be number 10 (Society Faces a Short-run Trade-off between Inflation and Unemployment. The reason that this article applies specifically to this principle is because in the article it is explained that unemployment is lowering and because of that, interest rates are rising. This explains the short-run trade-offs. Also, since unemployment is lowering, inflation will occur because they will now have the money to buy goods and services. Nntp:/ . Anytime. Games 195,000 New Jobs data on Friday offered hope for this elusive middle ground in the economy, as the Federal Reserve wrestles with when to ease its stimulus efforts without endangering the recovery and the markets. The pace of Job creation in June was sufficient to please investors and keep the central bank on course to slowly begin pulling back on its major bond-buying program this fall. But the Job gains were muted enough to calm worries of an abrupt exit by the Fed, a fear that has weighed on the markets lately. The employment report, which showed the economy added 195,000 Jobs, was the first since the Fed chairman, Ben S. Brenan, said in June that policy makers were ready to begin tapering the stimulus later this year if the labor market continued to improve. The Jobless rate was unchanged, at 7. 6 percent. The timing of the Fed action is critical. The central banks program of buying $85 billion a month in Treasury securities and mortgage-backed bonds has not only kept long- term interest rates low for borrowers, including big companies as well as individual home buyers, it has also helped prop up Wall Street. The possibility that the Fed sight move more quickly than expected to dial back the program has prompted investors to sell both stocks and bonds in the last six weeks and has raised rates on mortgages and other loans. Buoyed by the promise of moderate economic growth and a slow but steady tapering on the part of the Fed, traders pushed the stock market higher on Friday, with major indexes gaining about 1 percent. The 195,000 lobs added in June was significantly above the 165,000 monthly pace analysts had been expecting. And the government sharply revised upward figures for Job gains in April and May, increasing the average monthly gain in the first half of 2013 to 202,000 bobs. But the picture painted by the data hardly reflected a booming economy. The unemployment rate, which is based on a different survey from the one that tracks Job creation, remained stuck at 7. 6 percent, far higher than the historical pattern for this stage of a recovery. Other measures of Joblessness actually rose, with the broadest one that includes workers forced to accept part-time positions Jumping to 14. 3 percent, from 13. 8 percent. â€Å"Beyond the headline numbers for Job growth, it gets a little more mixed,† said Jan Hiatus, chief economist at Goldman Cash. â€Å"There is still a lot of slack in the labor market. Although the economy has held up better than some analysts expected in the face of tax increases and automatic cuts in federal spending this year, overall growth in economic output NAS also been tepid economy grew at an annual rate of 1. 8 percent in the first quarter, short of what’s needed to quickly lower the unemployment rate. Still, the Job figures for June were enough to prompt Mr.. Hiatus and other leading economists on Wall Street to predict that the Fed could announce a shift in policy in September, rather than waiting until December. This was a solid report and it will be seen by the Fed as fully consistent tit tapering in September,† said Dean Make, chief United States economist at Barclay. In addition, Mr.. Make noted, average hourly earnings rose 2. 2 percent year- over-year, a pace that is near a high for this recovery. Before setting a firm date, Fed policy makers will be closely watching to see if the Job market maintains momentum through July and August. â€Å"It’s not a done deal in September, Just more likely,† Mr.. Hiatus said. That was benign enough for traders on Friday. The Standard ; Poor’s stock index rose 16. 8, or 1. 02 percent, to 1,631. 89, while the DOD Jones industrial average Jumped 147. 9, or 0. 98 percent, to 15,135. 84, and the Nasdaq gained 35. 71, or 1. 04 percent, to finish the day at 3,479. 38. In the bond market, interest rates moved higher, as investors dumped debt on anticipation of faster growth and quicker Fed action. The 10-year Treasury note fell 1 30/32, to 91 17/32, while its yield Jumped to 2. 74 percent, from 2. 50 percent late Wednesday. Customer service plans prepared by --------------ABC---------------------------------------- Customer service plan approved by -------XYZ------------------------------------------------ 2: Case Scenario 1) Steps adopted by a hospital supervisor to resolve complaint made by the patient Confronting the complaints of patients may be stressful but is essential in a hospital. According to Bisschoff and Clapton (2014), depending on the supervisors efficiency in handling grievances and complaints of patients, the matter can either come under the supervisors control or can reach to the authorities. In this case, it is seen that Mary, an experienced nurse of Calvary Public Hospital, in her first few weeks, was working well, and the supervisor was also pleased with her conduct. But, after few days her attitude towards work changed completely. She became rude and bossy over her colleagues and patients. She became disobedient to her supervisor and even interrupted the conversations of her colleagues and patients consistently. Moreover, Mary didnt provide any medical help and service to a patient that has undergone a C-section. She was quite aggressive and rude in her behavior. So, it is necessary for the supervisor to take certain steps to resolve customers complaints and res tore the hospitals reputation (Murti et al. 2013). As suggested by Brahma (2013), the supervisor can show cause Mary for her conduct. Questions regarding her experience, duty and responsibility can be done. A vivid investigation should be conducted by the supervisor regarding that incident. The supervisor can question the patient, Mary and other co-employees those were the witness of this incident. Since Mary is an experienced nurse, the supervisor can conduct a meaningful conservation to understand her problems. It is to be followed by providing Mary a copy of Calvary Public Hospitals functionality and policy booklet. The supervisor can also request Mary to adhere to this book of policies and procedure for continuing her service in this hospital (Dishongh et al. 2013). 2) Strategies adopted to help Mary overcoming difficulties in meeting customer service standards Since Mary is an experienced nurse, she is quite aware of certain medical procedure and practices and hence can take care of patients. As mentioned by Faryadras and Dashti (2016), one of the strategies that can be adopted by the supervisor is providing basic training to her regarding Calvary Public Hospitals way of conduction, treatment of patients and expected behavior from nurses. It will help her to understand the difference of her working in this hospital with that of the other one where she had worked before. Another strategy that can be taken is putting Mary into a probation period where her activities, attitude, and behavior will constantly be measured. If improvements in her conduct and behavior are noticed, then the supervisor can allow her to continue her work; otherwise, can report her misbehavior to a higher authority. This will help in keeping up the hospitals reputation and meeting the customers standards. Moreover, the supervisor can also communicate with Mary to under stand her problems and also provide her with practical solutions for her adherence (Gilmour et al. 2013). 3. Calvary Public Hospital One of the well-known and renounced public hospitals in Australia is Calvary Public Hospital, located at Canberra (Klein and Shelton, 2015). The hospital was founded in 1885, and henceforth it maintains a good record about treatment of its patients and customer services. It is well recognized as one of the charitable, Catholic and non-profit heath care organization. The patients and staff members of this hospital maintain a good and friendly relationship with one another. The hospital is quite systematic in its approach when it comes to customer servicing and treatment. Periodic customer satisfaction survey is conducted in the hospital to monitor the activities, behavior, attitude and services of the medico and non-medico staff members towards their patients (Mander et al. 2013). Customer Satisfaction Survey for Calvary Public Hospital In any business, one of the vital keys to success lies in its top-notched customer satisfaction. So, during conduction of a customer satisfaction service, it is important for the hospital authority to know what they are asking for the customers and the reasons for it. A customer survey can be conducted through face-to-face conversation or can be conducted via phone (Murti et al. 2013). It is also important to take permission from their customers to give them a call regarding the customer survey. It can also be conducted through mailing a questionnaire or a customer satisfaction survey form to the customers. It is to be remembered that the survey should be conducted after the patients have freshly experienced its services and treatment. It will help them in getting accurate responses regarding the service. It is also necessary to remember that customers should be asked certain basic and simple questions to which they have to answer either Yes or No. According to Singh and Singh (2015) , based on these collected results, the hospital authorities have to understand the level of satisfaction or dissatisfaction of customers. The customers are also asked about the areas of amendments the hospital should consider for improving their level of customer service. Their opinions and ideas are, therefore, taken into account for the betterment of customer services. It is done to make the customers satisfied and content with Calvary Public Hospitals services (Patra and Ray, 2016). 4: Descriptive Questions 1) To provide quality products and services to the customer, explain how you can develop, procure and use resources effectively. It is quite essential to provide quality and timely services and products to the customers. It can be done through development, procurement and usage of resources efficiently and effectively. Calvary Public Hospital initially ensures that the skills and requirement of its staff members meet the organizations requirement. As mentioned by Hamilton and Tee (2015), coaching and training sessions are organized to mentor the colleagues and staff members. They are also trained and advised to adhere to customer service strategies for upgrading their services. Grievance department should be present that deals with all kinds of customer complaints and queries. Moreover, the medico and non-medico members should be technologically savvy to conduct their work appropriately. Computer knowledge is also required that helps the hospital authorities in documenting the customer personal and health details. It, therefore, assists the doctors and nurses to go through patients case history at the time of their admission or future re-admission. Hosseini et al. (2015) commented that the staff members should also have knowledge regarding the handling of patients as per government rules and regulations. The hospitals staff members should adhere to the anti-discrimination law, ethical principles, privacy laws, Occupational Health and Safety, Australian Consumer Law and financial legislation. They should also have strong techniques and principles to maintain customer relationship, understand customer behavior and their requirements. 2) In the monitoring of customer service, how organizations manage records and all other relevant documentations within the organizations systems and processes? According to Jabbari et al. (2014), Calvary Public Hospital is very particular in monitoring the customer services provided by both medico and non-medico employees of the hospital. A good record management embraces certain policies that reflect authenticity, reliability, usability and integrity of the hospital and patient data and information. The hospital authority can formulate as well as promulgate best practices for recording management requirements. It should also review and improve certain management policies periodically for establishing and implementing several guidelines, practices and procedures wherever suitable. Corporate Record Manager can also be appointed by the hospital authority to oversee the record overall management in the hospital. As opined by Khalili and Tayaran (2012), Calvary Public Hospital can also designate an Assistant Record Manager for each of the sections or hospital units. Their responsibility will be about documenting the files, naming them and facil itate accurate retrieval of the same whenever necessary. The recorded files consist of patients data, medico, and non-medico staff members data, hospitals asset and liabilities and list of machinery present and will be required in the future. Along with this, monitoring results of each of the staff members activities and their attitude and behavior towards their co-workers and patients are also recorded. These results and observations are, therefore, used for future reference (Worthington and Bristow 2016). References Bisschoff, C. and Clapton, H., 2014.
